Seco de los Olivos

Seco de los OlivosLocation: Also known as the Chella massif or the Banco de Chella, Seco de los Olivos is a submarine elevation situated 14 miles Southeast of Adra, at 36º31’N and 02º51’W.

Area Characteristics: Seco de los Olivos or Banco de Chella is a submarine mountain surrounded by small volcanic peaks. The pelagic area is highly influenced by the strong currents, which change directions during the day and create little upwellings; all that contributes in the creation of conditions to establish extraordinarily diverse fauna and flora in the area.

The importance of the area to preserve the species and the habitats of interest has been recorded by several organizations, Oceana and Alnitak among them. Important coral and gorgonian concentrations to cetaceans such as the bottlenose dolphin and the long finned pilot whale are common inhabitants of these places. Some of the species found here are mentioned for the first time on the Almeria seashore, and they demonstrate the high ecological value of this area.
